Blog

Uh, Blogger?

16 July, 2009
Does anyone know why you can’t use the fancy new (well, newer; they’re a few years old now) templates for Blogger blogs when you’re using FTP publishing? I think it’s ridiculous.

The Omniscient Google

25 June, 2009
Google knows everything. Or seems to, anyway. I just opened my Search History for the first time in eons, and wow. Just wow. There is so much information in there about what I search for and when. It knows when I search for things down to the hour (see the screenshot). With data like this from millions and millions of users, Google has an enormous aggregate set of data with a lot of power inside.

Uberman Sleep Schedule

18 June, 2009
I had made my decision: I was going to try it. The Uberman Sleep Schedule (USS) is a strict sleep regimen where you take 20-minute naps every 4 hours. You only sleep for 2 hours a day, and you can use those other 22 hours for anything you want. The idea is to get your body into a routine so it immediately drops into REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep instead of taking hours to get to the deep sleep stages.

OS X - Running Scripts As Apps

23 February, 2009
I had a need to run a REBOL script as an application on my Mac. I was tired of constantly opening Terminal, navigating to the right directory, and typing “rebol script.r” every time I wanted to run my script. This post contained my solution. It describes how to open the current folder you’re looking at in Finder in the Terminal, but the same principals worked for my problem. I created a workflow in Automator with a single “Run Applescript” step.

OS X Apps I Use

19 February, 2009
I am now a full-time user of the Mac. OS X Leopard on my MacBook is pretty much amazing. Blog Post Date

4 June, 2008
Here’s a little program I wrote a few weeks ago. It’s still beta, maybe still alpha, and I’m working out the kinks. Pretty much, you enter the URLs of your blog(s) at the top of the script, and it scrapes out the blog title and the date of your last post. Judging by the screenshot, I don’t post very often. I wrote it because I wanted one place I could look to see if it was time to post again, and in some cases, how egregiously vacant I can be at times.

Twitter, Schmitter

5 May, 2008
From the excellent (and unfortunately no longer updated) blog,Creating Passionate Usersby Kathy Sierra. Twitter is ridiculous. Have we really “progressed” so far that we need to know what every single one of our 567 MySpace friends is doing at this very instant? I mean, c’mon. No, John, I don’t really care that you sneezed 5.13 seconds ago. Maybe social networking is just pointless all together. MySpace and Facebook (or MyFace and SpaceBook, as I like to call them) are enormous networks with more people than you could ever hope to meet in your lifetime.
