Video: Bad Fat

24 April, 2008
Another video from yours truly. This is sort of a tribute to “Weird Al” and how immaculately he parodies songs and videos. EDIT: It looks like Youtube has fancy content analyzers that I wasn’t aware of, and because it identified “Fat,” which apparently is owned by Sony/BMG, the video can’t be embedded anymore. Check out the video on the original Youtube page.

Fixing Star Crash Blogger Theme in IE

18 April, 2008
The theme I am currently using for this blog, Star Crash by Blogcrowds, doesn’t natively display correctly in Internet Explorer. The entire sidebar ends up at the end of all the blog posts, and that’s really not acceptable. Here’s how to fix that. The Underscore HackThe underscore hack is a way to hide certain CSS rules from all browsers except IE. Because our page renders correctly in more standards-compliant browsers (Firefox, Safari, etc.

Ajax Loader

18 April, 2008
Ever wanted those cool little spinner graphics that have come to be known as the “Ajax loader” in your webpages? Well, search no further. As you can see above, there are a wide range to choose from at AjaxLoad.info. You generate a custom loader graphic after selecting the loader type, loader color, and background color. There’s also the option to have a transparent background (Although in my experience, some of the loaders don’t look very good on a dark webpage even with the image background set to transparent).

Web 2.0 Apps I like

30 March, 2008
I just found and voted in the Webware 100 Awards 2008. “From 300 finalists, pick the best products in ten categories,” states the website. As of right now, 1,880,462 people have voted, so I think it will be a pretty rounded result. I really do like and use some of those things, so I figured I’d give them my vote. They all perform exceptionally well in their respective categories. Here’s what I voted for:

Youtube: Strange_Random

My first Youtube video! Check it out: I’m official now.

Calculating Image Aspect Ratios

20 March, 2008
Ever wonder how programs like Photoshop or The GIMP calculate image aspect ratios? No? Me neither. But, I was recently tasked with crunching such numbers, and I found the answer to be quite interesting. One thing I really hate is when somebody has incorrectly specified the height and width properties of an image. It’s always too tall or too wide, and looks quite atrocious. In the past, I’ve just opened up The GIMP real quick, created a blank image the size of my original, and then used the Scale Image function to see my new dimensions.

Awesome Freeware Game: Mono

10 April, 2007
Rarely do I come across a game that is simple, well designed, and entertaining. Ninety percent of the games out there are complete knock-offs, immensely complex, and downright boring. Occasionally, though, a new game pops up that doesn’t steal any ideas. That has a very simple design. That’s a lot of fun to play. My latest entry to this prestigious list: Mono. The object of the game is to invert the color of the background from black to white, or from white to black.

Taskbar Shuffle

9 April, 2007
Do you get really frustrated when the windows on the taskbar get out of order? A program crashed, you accidentally closed something, etcetera, etcetera. I no longer have that problem, thanks to Taskbar Shuffle. It does exactly what it says it does, and nothing more: You can pick up and move windows around on the taskbar! This has proved to be invaluable to me, especially when I have ten or more windows open.

The New License Agreement

24 February, 2007
A friend and I had some fun with a License Agreement window. ResourceHacker is quite the tool. In the spirit of humorless corporations, the specific piece of software we “improved” has been concealed. ;)

Becoming a Documentarien

16 November, 2006
Netflix is a great service, and they happen to have a lot of documentaries that aren’t carried at your local movie rental store. I’ve watched more documentaries this year than I have in my entire life. It’s quite entertaining, and educational, too. These are some of the best ones I’ve seen. Super Size Me - A lot of people have heard of this movie, but it’s still one of the best documentaries around.
